Beard trim and shave in Vattiyoorkavu, Trivandrum
Most beard work is edge work. A beard that has been shaped well looks deliberate for three weeks; one that has only been shortened looks untidy again in five days. The barbers here spend the time on the neckline and the cheek line, which is the part that decides how the whole thing reads.
What we do
- Beard shaping and line-up
- Beard trimming
- Clean shave
- Foam shave

- Moustache trim
What to ask for
- Line-up
- The two lines that do all the work. The cheek line runs from the sideburn down towards the corner of the mouth and decides how sharp the beard looks; the neckline is the one underneath. Say if you want the cheek line taken straight or left following your own growth, because those look very different on the same face.
- Neckline
- Set too high it makes a beard look thin, set too low it looks unfinished. The usual guide is a curve that sits above the Adam’s apple and follows the jaw rather than cutting straight across the throat. Worth agreeing before the trimmer starts, since it cannot be put back.
- Trim versus shape
- A trim takes length off evenly. A shape takes the length where it is doing no favours and leaves it where it is, then finishes the edges. If your beard grows unevenly, the second is the one you actually want.
- Clean shave
- Everything off, with a razor rather than a trimmer. Say beforehand if your skin tends to react, so the finish can be adjusted rather than dealt with afterwards.
- Moustache
- Ask for the lip line to be cleared if hair is sitting on your top lip, and say whether you want the corners left long enough to grow into something or taken back level.
Questions we get asked
- Can I get a beard trim without a haircut?
- Yes. Beard work is a service on its own and plenty of regulars come in only for it.
- How often does a beard need shaping?
- Every two to three weeks is what keeps the lines looking deliberate. The length can go longer between visits; it is the neckline and the cheek line that give a beard away first.
- Should I wash or comb it before coming in?
- Come in with it dry and combed the way you normally wear it. A beard that has been flattened under a helmet or slept on sits differently, and the barber is shaping what he can see.
