A haircut is the reason most people walk through the door, and it is the thing the shop has done longest. The barbers here cut to the hair in front of them rather than to a chart on the wall, which is why the same person can ask for a skin fade one month and a grown-out classic cut the next and get both right.

What to ask for
- Fade
- Short at the neck, longer on top, with no visible step between the two. The thing worth saying out loud is where the short part should start. A low fade begins just above the ear, a mid fade around the temple, a high fade above that. Skin fade means it goes all the way down to the skin at the bottom.
- Taper
- The same idea kept to the edges. The sideburns and the neckline come down close and the rest of the sides are left long. It grows out far more quietly than a fade, which makes it the sensible ask if you cannot get to a chair every second week.
- Burst fade
- The short section curves around the ear like a fan and the back is left long. Ask for it when you want the shape of a fade without going short at the nape.
- Textured crop
- Cut short and worn forward, with the ends broken up so it sits where it falls instead of needing product. It is forgiving of a hairline that has started to move back, which is a large part of why it is asked for so often.
- Army cut
- Also asked for as an army haircut, a military cut or a crew cut. The back and sides come down close and are tapered rather than left on a hard line, nothing sits over the ear and nothing touches the collar, and the top is kept short enough to lie flat without product. Clipper grades are the quickest way to say how short you want it: a one or a two up the sides and a three or a four on top is what most people are picturing. Say whether the top should graduate into the sides or stay level, and say if it has to hold a set length for weeks rather than days, because that is what decides how short it starts.
- Pompadour or quiff
- Both keep length on top and lift it off the forehead. A pompadour is rolled higher and combed smooth, a quiff is looser and falls forward. Either one needs real length on top before it will hold, so say early if you are growing towards one.
- Hair tattoo and line work
- Lines cut into the fade with a trimmer. Bring a photograph. A design is far easier to copy off a screen than to describe across a mirror.

- Do I need an appointment for a haircut?
- No. Gents Camp is a walk-in shop and has been since 2006. If you would rather not wait, call or message the shop on WhatsApp before you leave home and ask how busy the chairs are.
- What are the busiest times?
- Saturdays and Sunday mornings are the heaviest, and weekday evenings after 6:00 pm fill up. A weekday afternoon is usually the shortest wait.
- How often should I come back for a fade?
- A fade reads as a fade for about two to three weeks before the line between the lengths softens. A taper or a longer classic cut holds its shape for closer to five or six. It is the shape of the cut that decides this, not the shop, so ask the barber what yours will do as it grows.
- Do you do army haircuts?
- Yes. An army cut is a short back and sides taken down close and tapered, with the top left short enough to lie flat, and it is a cut the barbers here do. Some people ask for the same thing as a military cut or a crew cut. The clipper grade you want is the most useful thing to say when you sit down.
- Should I bring a photograph?
- It helps, particularly for anything with line work in it or for a length you are not sure how to name. A photograph settles in two seconds what a description can take five minutes to get wrong.
