Hair spa, colour and treatments in Vattiyoorkavu
Kerala humidity is hard on scalps, and a good share of the work here is treatment rather than cutting. Anything from a head massage on the way out to a full colour or smoothing session can be booked, and the barber will tell you plainly if a treatment is not going to do what you are hoping it will.

What to ask for
- Hair spa
- A wash, a scalp massage, a conditioning mask and usually steam to help it go in. It is aimed at dry, rough or over-washed hair and at a scalp that has been under a helmet all week. It is a condition-and-relax service, not a repair for damage that is already cut into the ends.
- Head massage
- Shorter, and often added on the way out rather than booked on its own. Say if you would rather it were done without oil, because that changes what you can do straight afterwards.
- Dandruff treatment
- Flaking has more than one cause, and an oily scalp and a dry one are treated in opposite directions. Describe what it actually does, and when, rather than only naming it. If it has not shifted after a course of treatment, that is a doctor’s question rather than a barber’s and you should be told so.
- Colour, dye and henna
- Henna is a plant dye. It stains warm and it will not lift hair lighter. Chemical colour can go darker or lighter and covers grey more evenly. The one thing worth saying before anything starts is whether you have used henna recently, because colour laid over it does not always behave the way either of you expect.
- Straightening or smoothing
- Smoothing takes the frizz out and leaves some of the movement. Straightening takes it flat. Both grow out at a line, so ask what yours will look like in three months and how it should be washed in the first few days, before you commit to it.
Questions we get asked
- How long does a hair treatment take?
- It depends entirely on the treatment and on your hair. Call the shop and describe what you want; they will give you a realistic time before you come in rather than after you have sat down.
- Can I have a treatment and a haircut in the same visit?
- Yes, and it is worth saying at the start that you want both so the order can be set. Some treatments are better done after the cut and some before it.
- Will a hair spa stop hair fall?
- No, and nobody here will tell you it does. A spa conditions hair and cleans up a scalp. Hair fall has causes that sit outside a salon, and a treatment that promises to fix it is selling you something.
- Where is the shop?
- Vattiyoorkavu, in Thiruvananthapuram, at TC 36/1053-4, Bindu’s Arcade, 695013.
